The Community Greenhouse Project

Adding to on going efforts of the Tyler Street Business group to support and promote economic development, membership businesses and not-for-profits have organized by committee, including a working partnership with the City of Pittsfield, to convert the former bowling lanes of the historic Eagles Club, on First Street, into a growing greenhouse to encourage the practice of urban agriculture as both a form of economic re-vitalization and to address the essential community need to make more available: fresh food.

Efforts of this collaboration will include the design and construction of the greenhouse and plant yard, and result in an RFP or RFQ to solicit a qualified applicant to operate a greenhouse business, as a community resource. It is proposed that the construction and operation of the greenhouse will be self sustaining and established as per a developed and tested business plan.

Tyler Street Business Group understands a properly established greenhouse operation in an urban area can support and enhance local neighborhood businesses, encourage community involvement, create student internships and employment opportunities, and in proper partnership facilitate smart growth and a local food economy.
